The Necker Island of Coconut Grove: Grove Isle Hotel & Spa

August 25, 2011

Too soon to mention Necker Island? While we are all beside ourselves at the fire that occurred on Sir Richard Branson’s private hideaway (don’t laugh), we are happy to offer his guests like Kate Winslet and Ma and Pa Branson another romantic, luxury retreat for future vacays – the Grove Isle Hotel & Spa in Coconut Grove, Florida.

Much like Necker’s Great House, Grove Isle Hotel is the main oasis on an island set just off Miami’s Coconut Grove. Since we don’t all have “Sir” before our name and can’t helicopter our friends and family in for a special weekend, there is a bridge on the property connecting it to the mainland. As you drive over the bridge, your soul knows it will soon reach the solace it has been seeking (deeply poetic, huh?). Stunning views of the Biscayne Bay surround you, allowing you to feel like you’re walking on water in one of the most romantic locales.

Once on the island, you will drive past several condo buildings tucked deep within exotic foliage (you barely notice the buildings). After a short drive through the island, you will arrive at the Grove Isle Hotel. Its French Polynesian-like pulled linens and dark wood lure into the foyer, where you will feel your draw drop while your eyes focus on the view. Bring a napkin for the drool… The Hotel’s main doors create the perfect picture composed of the lush grounds, the endless Bay and, at the right time of day, the dancing flames of one of several fire pits.

After you’ve managed to pick your jaw up off the floor, get settled in your guestroom. There are only 50 guestrooms on the property (we don’t joke when we call something “private”), so make sure to request a room with a view of the Bay – although, you can’t lose since every guestroom boasts views of the island’s Marina or the Biscayne Bay. House of Travel prefers Rooms 101-105 – all these rooms are on the ground level and open onto a lawn bordering the Bay with immediate access to the one of the fire pits on the property. This block of rooms is fantastic for corporate and social groups. No matter which guestroom you are in, each room is laid back with a touch of elegance.

You must be starving by now. Good thing, because Gibraltar, the Hotel’s formal dining restaurant, is uh-mazing! Try the Organic Spinach and Arugula Salad with Seckel Pears – sounds simple, but it’s pear-fection (hey oh!). Prefer to dine by the pool or on the Hotel’s Bay-front beach? You can! That’s the glory of staying on your own private island (we are just ignoring the other guests there).  Not only does Gibraltar have a fabulous dining room and bar area inside the hotel, but the restaurant pours outside of the Hotel over layers of decks, allowing guests to eat at private tables nestled amongst the greenery.

Complete your ideal weekend escape with a service from the Grove Isle Spa. For you locals, the Spa is taking part in Miami Spa and Gibraltar is participating in Miami Spice. Getting married or want to lunch like the Real Housewives of Miami (see Episode 3)? Call House of Travel at 305.931.3002 to book your stay and visit our website.  With endless unforgettable views, intimate gathering places, and signature spa and dining, the Grove Isle Hotel & Spa is a great escape for private, laid back luxury.

Since we wouldn’t ask Necker Island guests like Princess Diana (we aren’t that cruel – she visited in the 80’s) to leave their pooch at home, feel free to bring the pups – any dog 50 pounds or less is welcome at Grove Isle Hotel & Spa. Grove Isle Hotel even has a “Paws in Paradise” package, which includes a pet bed and pet bowls for use during your stay and daily complimentary breakfast for two humans. Visit Grove Isle Hotel & Spa for more information about current promotions and yoga retreats on the property.
